When to have sex to get pregnant

If you are trying to conceive, you might be aware about the term ovulation. It is THAT time of the month when the females are most fertile. Having sex at this time of the female’s mentrual cycle can lead to pregnancy. Let’s find out what is the best way to check if you are ovulating.

What is ovulation?

Let’s start at the start. When females are born, they have about one to two million eggs in their bodies. After they attain puberty -- that usually happens between the ages of 10 and 15 years – the monthly menstrual cycles begin and continue until menopause around the age of 45-50 years.

The first day of the menstrual cycle is the first day of the period, and the last day of the menstrual cycle is the day before the next period begins. This span of a menstrual cycle is usually 28 days (but cycles that are regular but shorter or longer than 28 days, say 21 days or 40 days, are also normal).

Ovulation occurs each month around the mid-point of this menstrual cycle. Ovulation is part of a woman’s menstrual cycle when her body ovulates, meaning the ovaries release an egg (or more than one egg) that’s ready to be let out into the fallopian tubes. It is THAT time of the month when the females are most fertile. Having sex at this time of the female’s mentrual cycle can lead to pregnancy. Let’s find out what is the best way to check if you are ovulating.

How to know when I’ll ovulate/Symptoms

  1. Body Temperature: The body undergoes some changes during ovulation. There's a small rise in body temperature after ovulation takes place. This is caused by the increase in the hormone progesterone.

Mapping the body temperature with a basal thermometer (bought from a medical store) each morning before getting out of bed can help tell if ovulation is around. This method is not too accurate though. For the release of eggs from the ovary, luteinizing hormone or LH hormone is responsible and its levels in the body surge about three days before ovulation happens.

  1. Cervical mucus method: Cervical mucus is that part of the vaginal discharge that deposits on the crotch of underwear. The main purpose of cervical mucus is to either to prevent things from entering the uterus through the cervix or to provide nourishment and help move the sperm through the cervix into the uterus. It is secreted by glands found in and around the cervix.

The consistency of the cervical mucus (part of the vaginal discharge) changes consistency through all phases of the menstrual cycle. Cervical mucus  becomes clear, watery, stretchy, and slippery; and is often compared to the texture of raw egg whites, which helps the sperm to move up towards the ovum (female eggs).

Tracking the texture of this discharge helps knowing when ovulation is happening, and is known as the cervical mucus method.

  1. Ovulation Kits: Just like home pregnancy kits, home testing ovulation kits are available at the pharmacies. These kits check the LH levels in urine and tell the time of ovulation. This is a convenient and highly accurate method, possible by getting an ovulation kit from a medical store.

However, if you have a condition called polycystic ovarian syndrome or disease (PCOS/PCOD), you may get multiple positive results, even if you aren’t ovulating, making the kits useless.

  1. Apps and Websites: There are also apps and websites that track your ovulation by asking for some personal details and dates about the body and its menstrual cycles. Through this, they predict when ovulation is likely to happen for a certain person. Through tracking of the ovulation cycle for a while, one can know around which day of the menstrual cycle their ovulation usually happens, or know their ovulation calendar.

Other symptoms of ovulation:

Some young women experience changes when they are ovulating like:

  • a brief pain or dull ache felt on one side of the abdomen
  • slight cramping or pain on the left side of pelvis/abdomen
  • an increased desire for sex
  • a bloated abdomen
  • a keener sense of vision, smell, or taste
  • light spotting
  • breast tenderness

Sorry bete your asking is not clear by your sentence, but if the sex was unsafe take a home pregnancy test, ten days after unprotected sex. Morning urine is best for samples for it. If the result becomes positive, then consult a registered doctor and see what can be done. Also, you can contact FPAI clinic information about which you can get at their website. https://lovematters.in/en/resource/unplanned-pregnancy https://lovematters.in/hi/pregnancy/home-pregnancy-tests-dos-and-donts https://www.fpaindia.org/ If you would like to join in on a further discussion on this topic, join our discussion board, "Just Ask” https://lovematters.in/en/forum
mam my period is one day late i had sexual intercourse with my bf on 11th of october and my last period was on 22nd of september and we have used protection and his penis went in once and it for in for just 10 seconds are there any chances of pregnanacy
Bete Rithika the sex was safe, with condom, so seemingly the chances are low. So don't worry - but to assure yourself - do a home pregnancy test and calm yourself down. Sometimes periods are late because of stress, tension or hormonal changes. So the best would be to see a few days and then immediately find a doctor. https://lovematters.in/hi/pregnancy/home-pregnancy-tests-dos-and-donts https://lovematters.in/hi/pregnancy/pregnancy-scare If you would like to join in on a further discussion on this topic, join our discussion board, "Just Ask” https://lovematters.in/en/forum
Hii... I do unprotected sex on alternative days with my husband. I got my last periods on 21st September 2021. I have no periods till now and also I'm trying to conceive. 2 days back when I did the pregnancy test it displayed 1 dark pink line and 1 very faint line which was hardly visible. What should I do next?

We just had sex last October 12 and we used condoms, and he even pull out even though he wears condoms . My last menstruation date is October 3. The date today is November 3. When is the best time for me to take the pregnancy test? Am I pregnant?
Zarah bete the sex was safe - with condoms, it doesn't seem likely to be pregnant, sometimes trauma upsets our cycle too. But you take a test to feel more secure and make sure of the situation. After 10 days of sex you can take a pregnancy test, but its already a month, so as earlier as you can, do a home test. Morning urine sample is much better for this. Please maam, i and my partner had sex, and i did not ejaculate inside her but outside, but her period had delayed, one month, and we did home pregnancy test which showed negative, and this new month we did the home pregnancy test which showed negative, but until now she has not seen her period, what is the next line of action
Listen bete, always remember that even if the penis has entered into vagina for the sexual intercourse for a short time, without condom, it’s unsafe because one drop of sperm is also enough to be pregnant. And withdrawal is not working properly for the prevention of pregnancy, so don’t take risk, always use condom for safety. And if period has not yet come and test is not even known, please consult a registered doctor soon. Me and my boyfriend got close but we didnt have sex nor his penis touched my vagina but i used tissue to rub his semen from his penis and again used that same tissue to wipe my vagina now is there any chance of getting pregnant?
Seeming the chances are low. For pregnancy, it is important that the male sperm to go into the vagina of the woman and fertilize her ovum. Which can only be done by sexual intercourse. So don't worry - but to assure yourself - do a home pregnancy test and calm yourself down. https://lovematters.in/hi/pregnancy/home-pregnancy-tests-dos-and-donts If you would like to join in on a further discussion on this topic, join our discussion board, "Just Ask” https://lovematters.in/en/forum

If you are still having periods after unsafe sex, Angel bete, then there are virtually no chances of being pregnant. But just to be on the safe side, it would be wise to take a home pregnancy test. Please use condom next time. https://lovematters.in/hi/resource/safe-sex https://lovematters.in/hi/birth-control/top-10-facts-about-emergency-contraceptive-pills https://lovematters.in/hi/pregnancy/home-pregnancy-tests-dos-and-donts If you would like to join in on a further discussion on this topic, join our discussion board, ‘Just Ask’ https://lovematters.in/en/forum
Listen periods are late sometimes, because of stress, tension or hormonal changes or unsafe sex, but if it is irregular, please consult a registered doctor. And symptoms of pregnancy don’t come so soon. But if you had unsafe sex and want to be sure - do a home test - after 10 days of the unsafe sex... and then NEVER have sex without a condom. My wife had blocked fallopian tubes after doing hsg it has been discovered that her menstrual cycle has prolonged from normal 28 days to irregular (35- 40days). What could be the reason for this?
Dear James please consult to registered doctor about it. But generally the intervals of periods are from 28 to 34 days - which is different for every woman, OK? Ella dear, it is a very big misconception that sperm exit or pull out method does not cause of pregnancies because even one drop of the sperm is too high to be pregnant. So, it's better to do a home test - after 10 days of this act... and then NEVER have sex without a condom. Ok?
