Healthy genitals are important for the overall well being of a man. Problems with the penis or the testes can often be a sign of an underlying condition, which many men tend to often ignore because of the embarrassment. Here are some tips for keeping your penis and testes healthy.
Keep the penis clean

This one is the simplest: while having a bath, it is important to wash the penis by pulling back the foreskin and washing underneath. According to the medical experts, if this area is not washed properly, a substance called smegma – a natural lubricant for the penis – begins to gather in the area, which can become a breeding ground for bacteria.

The testicular self-examination

Every man should check his testes regularly. The instructions are simple – roll a testicle using the fingers and thumbs of both hands, and feel for any lumps. Men need to conduct this exam regularly to notice if there is any change, which may be a symptom of a wide range of diseases, including testicular cancer. Every man should conduct this self-exam at least once in four weeks.

Have protected sex

Sexually transmitted diseases are invisible and often give off no symptoms, till years later. The most common is chlamydia, which results in pain while urinating and swollen testicles. Another such disease is genital herpes, which can cause bumps or sores in the genital area. The best prevention for these is having protected sex.

Groom carefully

Many men groom their groin. However, it is essential to do it properly and carefully, especially along the scrotum. A small cut, apart from being painful, can also invite a host of bacteria or other microbes which can go on to result in a disease down there.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle

A healthy lifestyle is the key to a healthy penis. An erection can be affected by a number of factors – obesity, smoking, excessive drinking of alcohol and stress. Regular exercise and a good night’s sleep also helps keep the penis functioning properly.
