Covid-19 vaccination: FAQs

Have doubts on the Covid-19 vaccination? Well, we are here to clear them all. A list of frequently asked questions on Covid-19 vaccination is here for you to read!

Can I get Covid after being fully vaccinated?

As with any vaccine, it is possible for someone who is fully vaccinated with both the doses to still contract the virus. No vaccine guarantees 100% immunity from the coronavirus.

However, the vaccine can prevent the severity of disease and its effect. Those who receive the vaccine are far less likely to be hospitalised or die from it. It will blunt the sickness caused by the virus. It is still important to get vaccinated from Covid-19.

Do I still need to wear a mask and follow social distancing after getting vaccinated?

Yes. Even after receiving the Covid-19 vaccine, one needs to continue to follow all protocols like wearing a mask while going out, washing hands several times a day and maintaining social distancing in the public. Because you can still be a carrier of the virus and infect those who are not yet vaccinated or vulnerable to the disease.

What does this vaccine contain and how does it work?

The Covid vaccine contains a remnant of Corona or similar viruses. However, this remnant is weak and cannot make you sick. Once injected in our body, the vaccine helps our body create an immune response (produce disease fighting cells or antibodies) that would be similar to the one that would be needed if the body gets an actual Covid-19 infection.

So next time you come in contact with someone who has Covid-19 or you accidentally get infected, your body will remember how to fight the infection because the vaccine has helped your body create disease fighting cells or antibodies.

Can this vaccine cause Covid-19?

No, none of the vaccines cause the diseases even though they have the weakened version of the same strain of the diseases. The vaccine does not contain a complete form of the virus responsible for Covid-19 illness. While our body builds immunity, it is normal for a person to experience minor side effects such as mild fever.

How long before the vaccine's effect kicks in?

Two weeks after receiving the 2nd dose of vaccine our bodies start developing the antibodies - disease fighting cells or the protective proteins, necessary to fight the virus.

Should I get the vaccine if I’ve already had Covid-19?

If you have had Covid-19 and now you have recovered, you must be having some natural immunity or protection against the virus, but it is still unclear how strong that immunity is or long that immunity is going to last.

It is important to get the vaccine. The vaccine will help in developing a strong immune response against the disease.

I am in quarantine as I am recovering from the Coronavirus, can I get a Covid-19 vaccine?

No. Wait for 90 days from the day you test positive for Covid-19 to get your vaccination. Only if you do not have the symptoms of the virus like fever, cough and cold and your Covid-19 test is negative, then you can take the vaccine.

I tested positive for Corona today, can I go get vaccinated? Will it cure my Corona?

No, it can pose a risk for others if you go out for vaccination. So please stay at home. Remain quarantined for 14 days at home and get the vaccination done only after your test report is negative. The vaccination is for the prevention of Covid-19 and not a cure for it, if you have been infected.

I tested positive after getting vaccinated and now it is the turn for my second dose. Can I go?

If you have got infected with Covid-19 after receiving their first shot, you may take the second dose on your scheduled date, but only if your test report is negative, your quarantine period is over, and you do not have any symptoms.

I tested positive but I am asymptomatic. I feel good. Can I get a Coronavirus vaccine?

No. If you tested positive for the virus but have no symptoms, you still should wait for 4 weeks after your positive test result before taking an appointment for the vaccine. You may be asymptomatic but you can still be a carrier of the virus and can pose significant risk to others.

Can my second dose be of a different brand than the first dose?

According to the WHO, there are no studies that indicate any major risks or benefits of getting a different brand of vaccination for the second dose. Hence, it is not recommended.

Can I test positive for Covid-19 after the vaccination?

No, you will not test positive (in PCR laboratory or antigen rapid tests). However, because the vaccine prompts the body to generate disease fighting cells against Coronavirus, you may test positive in an antibody (serology) test that measures Covid-19 immunity in an individual, WHO writes.
