My first time visiting a gynecologist

When Mahi was about to visit a gynecologist for the first time, she was extremely anxious about what the doctor would be like, what questions would be appropriate to ask, and whether she would be judged. She shared her experience with Love Matters.

I remember when I first went to a gynecologist for a routine check-up. I was all by myself, but because I am sexually active, thinking about the doctor's questions made me terrified in advance. How would I explain when I started having sex? I only have one partner, but what if the doctor assumes the worst anyway?

Are you married?

I remember it was the year 2026 when I was set to visit a gynecologist for the first time, but I couldn't sleep a wink that night. I ended up asking AI a ton of questions. LikeShould I shave my pubic hair completely or are short hair fine? What will I say if she asks about marriage or my partner? What if other women in the waiting room see me, or I run into someone I know? What happens then?

I shared everything with my boyfriend and told him I should start doing routine check-ups. He offered to come with me, but I don't know why I turned him down. Maybe I wanted to face it all on my own.

Waiting room anxiety

Anyway, after a sleepless night, the day finally arrived.

Stepping into the clinic's waiting room felt surreal pink walls, posters of smiling newborns and photos of pregnant couples everywhere. I wasn't there for an abortion, but just imagine how isolating it feels for a 20-22-year-old single girl to sit in that kind of environment!

When I finally walked into the doctor's cabin, the very first question was about my marital status. My heart skipped a beat. I replied with a "No." Then she asked about my issue, followed by questions regarding my sexual activity. The moment I disclosed that I was sexually active, I braced myself, expecting the doctor to scan my character with her eyes. But surprisingly, nothing like that happened.

The doctor was extremely normal and professional. She didn't give me any weird looks, nor did she preach any moral lessons. She listened to me warmly, made me feel comfortable and prescribed the right treatment and advice for my problem. The moment I walked out of the clinic, I realized I had been worrying over nothing. Within a few days, the medication provided immense relief. Experiences like these make me realize how the fear of being judged drives so many young women into medical anxiety.

How to make your first visit easier

Your body, your health and your right! Keep these tips in mind when visiting a gynecologist for the first time based on my own experience:

  • Write down your questions in advance: Anxiety often makes you forget things. Jot down your symptoms and questions in your phone's notes app.
  • Check social media: There are many doctors on Instagram who post health reels and offer consultations. You can reach out to them for minor issues, but keep in mind that getting a reply might take time, so don't rely on it for urgent problems.
  • Set boundaries: Remember, the doctor's job is to check your physical health, not to judge your lifestyle or character. If a question makes you uncomfortable, you can politely say, "Doctor, please let's focus on my medical issue."
  • Bring someone you trust: If you feel like it, take a close friend or a sister along to offer support and make you feel secure.

The bottom line

Just as visiting a dentist for a toothache is completely normal, seeing a gynecologist for your reproductive and sexual health is equally normal. You don't need a marriage certificate to care for your body. Prioritize your health, say goodbye to shame, and take full ownership of your body!
