I found her response a little strange. We had been together for so long. I shared everything with her. Like- sending my photos and I never felt like I had to hide anything from her. So why was she so hesitant about one photo? For me, being in a relationship meant that we should not have to think so much before sharing things with each other. If I could be so open with her, I felt I could expect the same from her.
I messaged her again. Maybe I thought she had not understood what I meant. I explained again that I was not some stranger. If she trusted me, why should she have a problem sending me one photo?
After some time, she replied. She simply said that she had her own boundaries and wanted me to respect them.
But for me, the matter did not end there. I kept thinking, if there are so many boundaries even in a relationship, then what does being close to someone really mean? After all, I was her boyfriend. I was not a stranger. So, I think, I have this right to ask her for private photos etc.
My friends also talked about such things. Some would ask their girlfriends for photos, while others would say that their girlfriends had sent them photos themselves. It did not seem like a big deal to them. Maybe that is why I also felt that I was not asking for anything unusual or wrong.
Riya had said no, but I still had so many questions in my mind. Why not? Why not with me? If we were so close, then why did she not trust me enough?
I messaged her again. She did not reply.
One day passed. Then another.
I was even more worried now. I could not understand how a simple request for a photo had turned into such a big issue. Had my words hurt her so much that she did not even want to talk to me?
Then I started thinking about the future. What if our relationship became more serious? What if we got married someday? Would we still have the same boundaries between us? Would she still be able to simply say “no” to something and expect me not to question it?
I kept thinking about what my friends had said. In their relationships, these things did not seem so difficult. So why was it different between us?
What bothered me the most was that I could not understand her point of view. For me, love, trust and closeness meant one thing. Maybe for her, they meant something else.
To clear my thoughts, I decided to talk to my friend Priya. I told her everything and said, “Yaar, other girls send their photos, so what is Riya’s problem?”
Priya told me, “Look, you cannot force anyone to send you a photo just because you want one. Think about it yourself. If the person whose photo you are asking for does not feel comfortable sharing it, and you keep insisting, then you are crossing their boundary. Sometimes girls’ photos also get leaked or shared without their permission. If you are saying that she should trust you, you need to understand that these things can make someone uncomfortable. You should understand your girlfriend’s feelings.”
After talking to Priya, I thought about it a lot and I realised that she had a point. If someone asked me for a private photo, I might feel uncomfortable or worried too.
I finally understood that instead of making such a big issue out of trust, we should try to understand each other and respect each other’s boundaries.
