Firm evidence: a condom to keep you stiff

Good news for men who find wearing a condom makes their erection droop: condoms containing an erection-boosting gel. The gel increases the blood flow to the penis and helps keep it hard, researchers say.

Men who have used the new condom say it gave them a firmer, larger erection than usual.

Viagra condom

Licensed to the Durex brand, the CSD500 condom by the British biotech firm Futura Medical has been through clinical testing, is now close to approval by the European regulators, and could be on the market this year.

The media have dubbed it the ‘Viagra condom’ but the nickname isn’t entirely appropriate. Unlike Viagra, it isn’t designed for men with erectile dysfunction.

Safe sex

But it’s not just for fun either. It’s meant to meet the medical needs of men who struggle to maintain an erection while wearing a condom.

The European regulators are considering it on the basis that it encourages safe sex. It should be a boon for men who usually opt for risky unprotected sex because they find a condom spoils their performance.

It can also help prevent a common cause of sexually transmitted diseases or unplanned pregnancies: condoms that slip off because of withering erections.
