Asexuality: the ins and outs

Within the sexuality spectrum, asexuality is the least spoken about. What is it then? And why don’t we know more about it? Love Matters asked some of its fans for their views on the topic.

Asexually oriented

Asexuality is a sexual orientation. Just like you can be straight, gay, lesbian or bisexual, you can also be asexual. Being asexual means that you experience little or no sexual attraction to other people.

Asexuality is not the same as abstinence, which is the decision not to have sex for one reason or another.

Asexuality is as normal a sexual orientation as heterosexuality, homosexuality, and bisexuality. People who identify themselves as asexuals may fall in love and have healthy, romantic relationships - they just don't have a strong sex drive.

Asexuality is not a choice!

Asexuals or, more commonly known called, aces are often misunderstood due to this lack of sexual desire. People easily believe that it is a choice they make. That’s not true.

Just like other people, there is no cookie cutter that applies to all asexuals. Some feel arousal while others feel none. Some remain celibate while others have sex occasionally and some are repulsed by sex.
